Loopcloud vs Splice (not really)

DAW or Software Questions

These labels are either on Splice or on Loopcloud but they don't appear on both, which is a shame. Could there be a number of labels that now regret signing the exclusivity clause?

I should mention that on Splice you can also buy sample packs from other Splice users, that is to say sample packs they made themselves. I am sure Splice insiders know which users offer high quality samples.

Music Biz Analytics?

General Producer Chat

@simon-unsigned thx for that suggestion, their interface at least provides a broader range allowing a quick perusal compared to the boxy presentation of Beatport themselves. Swiftly exploring the Tech House top 100 I have found out I only like (somewhat) 1 track in 10 and the whole genre is rather predictable/trite/formulaic/boring. Starting to have doubts about the destination/purpose of my journey!

Music Biz Analytics?

General Producer Chat

Even though it is a case of running before I can walk I would like to suss out the commercial dimensions of certain musical genres I might take an interest in. Is there a free resource that you know of that provide genre based analytics? Of course I know the Beatport top-100 with its current h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e number one at the time of this writing (California Dreamin' (feat. High Jinx) by Chris Lorenzo) : https://www.beatport.com/top-100

I have just subscribed to viberate.com which gives me a week or so access to the ridiculously expensive analytics module but no analytics are available yet for nearly all dance genres unless we zoom out to the electronic genre itself. Still interesting because of the hundreds of names of (commercially) successful artists whom I never heard of [sigh] and the realization that Music is only one pillar of the Social, Music, Network triad… [sigh 2].

Adam Goodlet - Psychedelic Sound Design Live Stream - 02.11.2021

Livestreams

Thx Adam, that's a good resource, not nearly as daunting a process as I feared. Got me the $25 version of Vital too, quite a different beast, most of the presets are well outside the bread & butter genre, they are kinda ... crazy... which is fun. Obviously quickly added Polyverse Infected Mushroom "Wider" and URSA DSP "Lagrange" to my DAW, good tips.

Trying to suss out how 'relevant' (or call it ‘vibrant’) Psytrance is as a commercial musical genre, but for instance viberate.com doesn't have analytics for this genre yet (it does know "Snow Crystal" by Babalos is the most streamed Psytrance track last month which is perhaps revealing enough). I get that this genre is supposedly antithetical to commercial endeavours but I reckon that’s mainly a romantic façade with the usual music business workings running inside like in all other genres.

Adam Goodlet - Psychedelic Sound Design Live Stream - 02.11.2021

Livestreams

The synthie/melodic/fx bits etc. I can see as something you should indeed put your artistry and musical vision into, but the Psy kick seems as staple as staple gets, couldn't we just use them from a pack (or a Kick 2 preset) and do a little tweaking on them? Esp. with Loopcloud now being our trusted loop dealer...

Song Explorer 003 - Where Embers Glow

General Producer Chat

Probably one of the most intelligent analyses/break-downs of a track I have ever seen; verbose/discursive in the best sense and yet very hands-on at the same time. So many problems analyzed and solved, pitfalls identified and avoided in such a short space of time with various gems of creative solutions put forward; all that interspersed with nuggets of productional wisdom and some original notions like ‘slurpy rhythm’, ‘random breaths’, ‘unflowering of the musical idea’ etc. Carving out space for the many elements and maintaining groove are not in themselves unique challenges for a (re)mix but this vid deals with these issues in an original and compelling way. Sharing this compact masterclass with the world is very generous indeed! Let's ruminate on this one for a bit: “Subtraction is as powerful as addition”. Nice bonus at the end of the video: the 'shoehorn dilemma', go watch it!

Cloud Bounce desktop app

General Producer Chat

BTW I do realize that the CloudBounce desktop software is simply a GUI of sorts to the cloud AI so who knows what fantastic improvements they have made on the AI but why would they hide any enhancement under a bushel (mixing metaphors) of tumble weed? I don’t think they would miss out on a salient marketing opportunity like that, so that can only lead to one conclusion...

Cloud Bounce desktop app

General Producer Chat

Some time ago I wrote an overly generous review. Some points in that review are still valid I guess (you'll find it below). At that time, I did not do any research looking into other online mastering services and since then I found out there are plenty out there. Recently also Plugin Alliance entered the fray with the (brainworx) mastering.studio website and in the higher price range you can find companies like Abbeyroad (but they don't have an AI solution so you'll have to wait a couple of days ...) and there always is ... fiverr!

What worries me is that the CloudBounce desktop software still remains the same 1.01 version, I have never received any news from them that they have added new features or made improvements. I am starting to believe there isn't any ongoing development which is a big red flag. Nothing like the excitement around a program like "Loopcloud" with frequent updates and new features, the silence around CloudBounce is deafening! Always a bit iffy when a company offers unrealistic per case tariffs and monthly subscriptions but offer a too-good-to-be-true lifetime subscription at the same time. We can only hope that with "lifetime" they don't mean the (short?) "lifespan of the company" but at this point we are all kept guessing. I’d reckon at its inception it was a decent enough investment project for those infamous private equity companies but they are never in it for the long haul.

Online I learned a rather contradictory message from some established names in the business: "mastering is relatively uncomplicated and you'll learn something new at every project". So I'll stick with the learning curve and use cloudbounce for comps, temps and stems.

------------------------------------------------
CloudBounce buyer’s review:
Great to have even if you just use it for ongoing projects, stems or 'comps'
Great to have even if you just use it for ongoing projects, stems or “comps”. Slightly controversial because this service takes a bite (however small) of the revenue model of professional mastering, which is a small industry on its own. You can see plenty of comparisons on Youtube when mixed by ear (by a person) wins the public vote over the cloudbounce versions but with plenty of people saying there wasn't much between them.

So given budgetary restrictions or you just not (yet) being skilled enough (or having the proper hardware or plugins) the Cloudbounce solution might be just what you need. If you think slightly out of the box you could also (quickly) use it on projects that you haven't finished yet (e.g. soliciting feedback of your 'work in progress' from a select group of people) or you could use it on polyphonic/multitimbral/multilayered 'stems' you are making or - and this is an underappreciated aspect of the cloudbounce service - you could use it on a track you (kind of) finished and mastered yourself and then use the CloudBounce version as a 'comp' (playing with the cloudbounce settings) to see whether your version is ok or could benefit from +/- bass, mids, highs, volume, clarity, stereo width etc. etc. Being able to load a reference track in the desktop version of CloudBounce is very useful. I would also assume they tweak their AI and other stuff so this service might become even better in the future. For the current promotion price it is (almost) a no-brainer but acquiring the mastering skills yourself remains the ultimate goal (for some of us).
