Yay! Another great Producertech Remix Comp :-)

So the question/challenge for me is do I work in 3/4 for the first time ever or try and convert the stems to 4/4 (if that's at all possible?) - Decisions, decisions...

But I have decided that I'm going to limit myself to just work with the stems and the little bit of hardware I've got - I'll only be using Ableton as a multi-track & mixing desk

You can totally convert the stems to 4/4. Totally up to you though. 3/4 is a challenge and will require more experimentation in a lot of genres!

We'll cover these considerations and 4/4/ conversion in a stream next week.

Hey PT,
Im a newbie when it comes to most things in producing. ive extracted the files and put them into abelton one by one on different tracks. Loaded 135bpm and set it off and its sounding very strange. Is there a way of uploading it into abelton so the arrangement makes sense, or is this whats expected, no arrangements -Thats what im suppossed to do?
Thanks

Hi there,
did you make sure to set also the rythm to 3/4 instead of the default 4/4?

Warping is important--if you throw the stems in at the default tempo (usually 120bpm) and then adjust the tempo, the program assumes that the default tempo is the *actual* tempo of the stems--unless you disable warping or change the tempo before adding the stems.

Not sure if it was just my setup, but when I imported the unwarped stems, Ableton set a start point a few 100 ms in on some of the tracks, so the stems weren't all starting at the right/same point - so it took me a while to work out why it wasn't playing along nicely together.

Thanks for the Ableton Tutorials on this. Since I work on Logic and I am quite new to this, I have problems to replicate the workflow. Could you give me some hints which function I need to use to change the time signature? I managed to import the stem into logic with 3/4 time signature at 135 speed. But I already fail when trying to set a marker at bar 176 to have the reference.

No worries! Sure, I'll see if we can put together a quick vid showing this in Logic... off the top of my head, I would use flex audio to stretch the stems to the correct number of bars in the arrangement (e.g. using the flex tool on the region).

Hi @Rob, thanks for the videos I found them incredibly useful. I'm loving the tip to open look at the frequencies and the breakdown/drop ideas in last video.

I also wanted to feedback that you gave a slightly inaccurate description of the first and last chords:
Chords described in video:
F7, Emin7, Amin7, Gmin7, Cb7

However, the correct notation should be as follows:
FMaj7, Emin7, Amin7, Gmin7, C7

I hope you don't mind me pointing this out..

Hey @smillington! All good. I was trying to make things clear for people rather than completely accurately labelling chords (e.g. reminding that the 7 is flattened making it a dominant 7 rather than major 7). I think C7 could confuse some people, thinking it's a major 7 chord still.

@sentinel71 here's a Logic vid showing the warping of stems in that: https://youtu.be/Lm3Td9sloic

Thanks Rob (@ptmembership) - I was watching the livesteam a few minutes behind, so missed my question at the end. I wanted to ask Dom Ruckspin about how he deals with writers block - I've seen allot on this already but just thought it would be interesting to hear his view.
My main challenge with this remix challenge at the moment is that I have got something that has a similar feel to the original and I am trying to find a way change it up, but struggling to find something that works. I am noticing a common theme where I hit a brick wall with arranging and I get over half way through and want to put in a breakdown or introduce a new idea into a section. I normally thumble through somehow (by working out a way to keep some elements and change others). As I write this message, I'm thinking I will try chopping that guitar part to pieces through a sampler...

@hyzexdj No, you can make the remix in whatever software you like. The stems are just audio so you can import them into all DAWs. Live and Logic are just the most popular ones with users on this site, so we've included some tutorials showing specific timestretching examples in those, but you can carry out all the same sorts of actions in FL Studio as far as I'm aware - I think you use the Time-Warp sample feature.

Finally I was able to get it going. Just working on a deep house version of it. Really tough one because of the 3/4 rythm. Thanks to Rob's advice I was able to transform it back to 4/4. Now I have a draft arrangement almost finished. Now comes the fun part by adding some ear-candy. Hope to release it until end of next week.

Challenge accepted :-)

Hello people! This is my submission to the sample challenge. Amazing song and vocals!! loved to work on it. What I did: First, I converted all the stems to a nice 4/4. Then after deciding to use all the vocals ( lead and backs) I streched them out to a bpm comfortable for me to produce. Finally I built up a kind of tropical latin beat respecting the order of verses, chorus etc. It was a hard but enjoyable journey!! Hope you like it!

Apologies - Im sure this is the wrong place for this note.
Im massively looking forward to the livestream tonight as after what feels like a lifetime on this track, I'm about to enter into mastering stage of my Somewhere with you Remix, so its perfect timing for me.
I am trying to do everything in Reason rather than Ableton, so was wondering if you would be able to emphasise principles and any free VSTs you could recommend to do the same job as you have built in Ableton. (Appreciate you may not wish to go down a rabbit hole of Reason, as this is fairly niche).
I will try to keep up with the stream and put my questions in the chat as we go (as long as I don't get dragged into family responsibilities)
Anyway - see you folks on the other side....

I've gone back and forth between three projects and now I'm so confused what the right chords I've screwed up all of them. Could someone please run through the Glassy Chord progression? That's all I need. Sound designing a show set in the 20's and trying to keep up with 'concert' this or that in brass and woodwind... my ears are exhausted. Please?

Wait... we are in F, right? or was it C maj?

And if anyone knows Ken Burns, I could really use his help with educating some folks on how NOT to whitewash 1920's jazz... again... damn I'm tired of a poor education system.

Hi mate - Rob made a video on this which breaks it down pretty well. Also if it makes sense the chords are mainly:
FMaj7, Emin7, Amin7, Gmin7, C7
I would say the key is a bit ambiguous between F and C to be fair (as there is a b flat and a b natural in the chord progressions) - Personally I'm going with F. Hopefully this is helpful

By the way, I took a listen to your other tracks on here and am loving your style; would love to hear what you can do with this track as well.

Thank you very much! That's why I wrote down a Bflat7... which is not right... that's what I missed... and not a Cmaj. Okay! Now to get back to my crapload of cut-up stems. You are awesome, thanks for listening! We've got 50-ish hours left... back to work...

After I stop banging my head on the wall... I've got a director that only listens to SFX on a phone speaker. ONLY on phone speaker, and wants to complain about the weird sound she hears (ie... anything below 100 hz or above 5K hz)... IN A RAGING STORM SCENE. Raging.... raging....

Well this didn't turn out quite how I first intended it to. I started with an idea for creating quite a heavy breaks version in 4/4 but just couldn't get the vocals to work. After trying a few different ideas out it ended up something completely different.

I've kept it in 3/4 and stayed quite true to the original structure but hopefully given it quite a different vibe where I've gone for a Cafe Del Mar/Ibiza sunset type track. Really enjoyed the challenge of working in 3/4 fo rthe first time ever.

Hello! 1st time here, this is my submission to the challenge. As everbody told a bit about what they did, I'll do the same. I tried to keep the 3/4 flavour and mixed it with a 6/8 beat in parts. I used the vocals and a couple of other sounds from the provided stems. Also added some samples and instruments. I hope you like my work, it's a beautiful song and I enjoyed too much all the process. And all are great submissions, congrats for all you and good luck!!!

Hi all - this is my first time entering the remix challenge too, so it's nice to be in good company. I took the plunge and went to 4/4 and had some good fun picking out the main elements of the track, trying to keep some integrity and adding a deep bassline, a lead and a fun vocal. It's a very different style to what I would normally create. If only I had more time... 😀

AAARRGGH!!! 7 projects and they all suck, except maybe one. And I would need another 24 to finish... thanks to an over-demanding director that qualifies my product over a phone speaker... but it plays through 1000 watts to JBL stacks 60 feet in the air on either side of the auditorium.... If I finish it tomorrow I may post it anyway, though I know it won't count. SO angry right now over misuse of my time by a FIRST-TIME DIRECTOR... this contest meant more. And I'm out of beer.

Don't think that way dude. Just make stuff when you can, share it, learn and I'm sure you would get feedback anyway.. You win!

Hi. Its better something than nothing, and better late than never.
So Ive missed the deadline due to a mislaid hard drive then an unexpected family bereavement.
Still I started something, an intro, and spent quite a bit of time on it. So I thought I'd post it up anyway, even tho.. you know.
Enjoy.

Hello Rob,

after permission in yesterdays Livestream from Brenden, I've uploaded the song also onto my soundcloud account. You said we should give you the links to it, so that you can make a playlist. Here we are:

Hey Elenad. Yes actually, we unlisted it because of all the technical issues! You should still be able to view it with the link though as it's unlisted not private: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQbE_j36hU8
