Upgrading Laptop - what specs to go for?

General Producer Chat

Then make sure you get a cooling pad. Heat is your enemy. I know people do trust laptops for performance, but they are also streamlining their processes as much as possible, prerendering and automating whenever possible to reduce CPU load. Actually, a great method for performing and limiting any possible mistakes in a live show. 100% believe in it.

BUT for raw creation, I prefer more horsepower and stability so I can throw everything at a composition as it develops, without hiccup or crash (98% of the time). I have a mobile setup with a Surface Pro with 16 gig, but it just doesn't hold a candle to my main system and overheating is a real issue when I'm stacking Kontact VST3's... and even WORSE when I start adding Izotope plugins... the important ones take serious CPU power to run I believe.

THE BEST SYNTH I HAVE EVER... OMG.

DAW or Software Questions

Yep, the GX-80!!!

First, the Cherry version can take far more tuning and tweaking. I've only had a few software hiccups, and I've been pushing the possible layers.

Everything sounds... deeper, fuller, more level of detail. And the presets... they are like little flags that say "This is the scene in BladeRunner...," or a Tangerine Dream sound, or something to carry a torch with (Chariots of Fire)... or MJ's Thriller album. It's hours of "I KNOW that sound!"

BUT, then you start soundcrafting... and your head explodes. This I get. Honestly I have issues with Massive X, and still have trouble with sound creation... it doesn't do what I want it to do because of my own limitations with the software (meaning Massive and X really). Patching actual cables through banks of processing was easier to me.

But Cherry's CX-80 is, for me, far easier to grasp. Plus, the sound is awesome... I mean it.

THE BEST SYNTH I HAVE EVER... OMG.

DAW or Software Questions

Okay... the is not a question, more a statement for a piece of software that I (in my fairly informed opinion) is the BEST MF-ing thing I have heard... like ever... from a VST3.

Cherry Audio emulated the CS-80 and the orginal CS 1? I believe, can't remember.... anyway... Arturia did this too... not as good. I was not impressed. But the Cherry Audio CX-80 may be the single best $60 VST you ever buy.  Ever.  Yes it's only 60 bucks. ONLY $60 to get the synth Hans Zimmer and Vangelis used (yes Chariots of Fire and BLADERUNNER... OMFG), and Stevie Wonder called it the "greatest synth ever" and just to point out... the THRILLER album (yes, MJ) had the CS-80 all through it.

This is a valuable piece of history recreated to a great detail... that you can now use. Pair this with any modern VST's and VST3's and WOW... you will spend hours CREATING SOUNDS. This thing is SO good. You could just buy it to recreate BILLIE JEAN in perfect detail, or the moment when Rutger Hauer dies in BLADERUNNER... or you could create your own awesome sonic joy.

Or don't believe me. That's fine too. Be well.

Love the dancing brass and great bass! Great job with placement in the mix. Glad you got use out of the cleaned intro! Glad someone else found a way to use it in a great way. Then it wasn't wasted time.

I especially appreciate the the clean separation and.... focus on the dominate sound of the moment! Good understanding of balance.

Out of the desert, stumbles a man, dressed for desert survival. He stumbles and falls, dumping a bag. All of its contents scatter at your feet: one 1" reel-to-reel, an 8-track, a 12" LP at 33 1/3, two SONY MiniDisc's, a CDR, one SACD, and a recordable phonographic cone.

"From the deep desert, I bring you the Re-HENGEian MegaMENTATix!"

He falls forward into the sand. His body immediately crumbles to sand, merging with the desert.

I set myself an odd extra requirement... I envisioned something that might be recreated on stage as a concert megamix... meaning I needed to keep the original BPM, which turned out to be 96.69 BPM by my measure. Opinions are welcome! I look forward to the other submissions! And I'll sit back with a tall can of "Oh Shit, I should have thought of that," and enjoy.

(opens beer... "Yep... hearing way better than my complicated remix concept"

I appreciate you all. Thanks for listening to my attempt for this challenge!

-Michael

Electronic Music Documentaries

General Producer Chat

I struggled to think of an EDM doc I like... but...

First... I own this, and highly suggest getting your own copy with the highest quality audio possible. A youtube video doesn't give you the detail and accuracy in the audio that you really want... but, it's a good place to start. And, technically it's a concert... but in my opinion, this a MasterClass on what is possible with sound.

Pink Floyd, Live at Pompeii.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfBNJLdVvoc

(again, buy it for best fidelity)

And... I've yet to watch it... it's on my to-do list... Trent Reznor is in it, along with Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman and more. But it seems completely relevant... because a great composer or DJ is able to take the audience or the dance floor on a journey.
