BANGERS

General Producer Chat

I'll chip in with a couple of golden oldies, these stick out for me as a couple of tracks that always kicked a bit harder than the rest on a club system or warehouse

Renegade Soundwave - The Phantom

Dee Patten - Who's the Badman

SUCCESSION ASSIGNMENT

Announcements

Here's my rework.  Tried a few things to put a different twist on it but they didn't work so I kept it more like the original but went electronic and grunged it up a bit.  Really fun to do and learnt some useful stuff about music theory in the process.

SUCCESSION ASSIGNMENT

Announcements

Another top assignment - thanks Rob!  Lots of opportunity to stamp your own mark on this.

Couple of questions around the rules - are we free to try a different tempo and also tweak the timing/rhythm of some of the note patterns in the MIDI you provided?  I get it will still need to be recognisable as the same theme tune.

Self Releasing Music

General Producer Chat

Hi Samuel, you probably don't want to worry too much about having your own label if you just want to get your tracks out onto streaming platforms.  In these days of self-releasing it doesn't seem to be that relevant.  The exception is if you want to build a reputation for a group of different artists or aliases on a DJ download platform like Beatport/Traxsource/JunoDownload.  To me, these seem to be only places where you can search by label.

I've just started doing this and because I'm very old (and old school) I decided to go down the own label route.  I use a distributor called iMusician that allows you to set up your own label on Beatport.  But what I've found is that it's very difficult getting any visibility on Beatport if you're starting from scratch like I am (e.g. no social media presence).

If you go with Distrokid, that'll be a good choice and very cheap and easy to get on all the main streaming platforms.  You can also release on Beatport through them (for an additional charge) and it will appear as a release on the Distrokid label.

If it's just streams you're after and not downloads, you can look at using sites like Submit Hub and Groover to get on playlists etc.  And also Facebook Ads (the cost can build up on these though).  There's some good advice on YouTube from people like Andrew Southworth to help get started releasing through Distrokid and the marketing side of things.

Good luck and if you'd like any more help or questions answered I'll do my best to help with what very limited experience I have on this.

Xmassignment - Win Big Prizes!

Announcements

I think this was the toughest assignment yet!  Don't think I made it easy on myself with my choice of song and was going to start again but just won't have the time.  I went for a carol in 3/4 time and used some of the original MIDI track that I downloaded.  Trying to convert it into a different style but keep it recognisable was really tough.  I didn't transform the MIDI other than put it through an arpeggio and a lot of delay, but then it's ended up pretty unrecognisable so not sure if it will qualify for the comp :-)

But thought I would post it up anyway and see if anyone can guess what it is!

Chilled Breaks track

Let us hear you!

Hi Rob and Tone, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated and very useful to hear.  Yes, I was going for something quite piercing with the lead sound but, like you both say, it's a bit much.  But I've got some good input to work on and improve on my next track!

TECH HOUSE LIVESTREAMS

Livestreams

Hi Rob, I've been away so not had a chance to check out this new course or view the last livestream yet, but will do soon.

I've not got any questions yet, but do have an idea/request for a future livestream.  Could members upload finished or nearly finished projects where you take a look and make suggestions on how they could be improved, making the changes live on the stream?

Track in progress...

Let us hear you!

Hi Tone - really like the track.  If the real vocal doesn't work out, I think you could still use this computer vocal with a bit of processing, it makes the track work for me (got an 'Air' sound to it).

If I had to pick one thing that could maybe improve the mix, there's a pad-like sound in most of the track, it's what I think you've used as the bassline, seems to have a lot of higher frequencies which might be masking a lot of the other sounds because it's got a lot of sustain.  You could try layering a 2nd bass note with less sustain and/or filtering down the current sound.

When it's ready, let me know if you'd like me to release it for you (see my other post on here happy-1)

Chilled Breaks track

Let us hear you!

Finally got around to finishing one of my tracks.  I'm happy with the composition although I realise my taste is "a bit niche" and not everyone's cup of tea.  Where I think I really need to focus and improve is on the sound production and mixdown, I just can't seem to achieve that clear, punchy sound I'm looking for.

So any constructive criticism or advice on the production/mix side of things would be gratefully received.

Thanks
