Stereo field diagram quesstion

General Producer Chat

Hi Petter - thanks for the detailed reply.  It's really useful and very much appreciated.  I was taking the diagram quite literally rather than as an illustration so everything you've said makes sense and I'll definitely use it in future productions.

Cheers

Simon

Stereo field diagram quesstion

General Producer Chat

Hi all - I've got a bit of a random question that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer for me.  I've seen a few of these diagrams before and was interested in this one which I've pasted along with the article link below.

It shows a lot of the parts on both sides of the stereo field but not in the centre (i.e. mono) and the article talks about the track being 'super wide' and pushing the sounds wide in the mix.

From looking at the diagram you can see the Pad Atmos is pushed out from the centre/mid and wide out to the sides, which I know you can do with a widener or similar process.

But it also shows the Vocal Synth element being both on the far right and far left of the stereo field with nothing in the centre or even close to to mid.

So my question is;  How is this done?  I'm guessing it's not a widener as that would just spread it out from the centre.

Do you simply double up the sound on 2 channels and pan each one hard left and hard right?  Or is it something a bit more complicated or just a plug-in?

Any insights/ideas would be very much appreciated! :-)

I'm always finding problems with clashing freqs and too much content cluttering my mixes so any techniques I can learn to improve the mix is very much needed.

Here's article link: https://www.masteringthemix.com/blogs/learn/hit-maker-mixing-and-mastering-engineers

Xmas Member Assignment 2024 - Fatboy Slim Tribute - Win Avenger 2!

Love the INXS sample Petter! (I think that's what it is) and the mix is very polished too, what's your secret? :-)

Right, time flies and stuff piling up for the weekend too :O So had to try and get this one done ...

Ideally should've spent some more time on percussion details and especially the acid synths - and mixing - but hey I'm totally flabbing around in the deep end here anyways, so not sure if it'll make too much of a difference :D

Anyways, I've sampled some bits from a couple of my (many) favourite 80's songs and tried to make something in the spirit of early Fatboy Slim ... hope it's not a total abomination. I called it 'Move Yourself' and here we go:

I had a lot of fun with this one and went for the classic era of breaks, vocal snippets, stabs and 303.

Also had a go at a tempo change/ramp up which I've never done before and also kept it all sample-based except for the 303.

Reminded me of the old days when all I had was an Atari ST and an Akai S950.  Rumour has it, that's what Norman still uses, but I doubt that's true!

Ableton Live 12 Livestream #1 - MIDI Tools - Tuesday October 8th - 18.00 BST

Livestreams

Hopefully I'll be finished with work and able to join this one live - I really want to get into v12 stuff more.  And is it just a coincidence that this livestream has been scheduled for the day that Move is getting announced...??? :-)

Ableton 12 Courses

Member Content Requests

Hi - I'd second this.  I've upgraded but not yet really sat down and got to grips with the new stuff.  Specifically I'd be interested in learning more about the new MIDI tools.

If not a formal course, then some member bonus tutorials would great.

Thanks

Simon

Hi all - here's my entry, some of you will probably recognise the guest vocalist.  It's not David Essex but it's close! :-)

https://community.producertech.com/simon-unsigned/uploaded_audio/438/my-8-tracker

I used the limitation of the 8 tracks to try and improve the way I use the same part/track in different ways - I've tried to build it up from a very mellow intro to a more full-on final section (while still keeping it fairly chilled).  The 8 tracks are:

1 Pad

2 Synth Arp

3 Bassline

4 Kick

6 Snare

7 Vocal

8 White noise sweep

8 TRACK ATTACK! New Member Assignment

I'd like to get something clarified on the rules around the use of sampled loops.  I wouldn't consider using a full breakbeat loop as that includes a full drum kit which wouldn't be allowed if using separate samples.  While it might be technically within the rules, I think it goes against the point of the assignment.

But what using a simpler loop, such as a hi hat or top loop?  I'd like to use something like that and also cut it up so I can use it as a one shot or smaller snippets in places and then use the full loop elsewhere.  So I'm using a single sample, just in more than one way (being creative, right?)

And I'm guessing it would be ok to use a full vocal phrase as a sample and cut that up in similar ways, so it's the same principle but on an instrumental loop rather than vocal.

Tricky one to call... :-)

Another great assignment!!! Anything that puts limitations on your usual process and makes you think more creatively has got to be a good thing, it is for me anyway :-)
