HELLO 4AM REMIX COMP!

Announcements

Apologies - Im sure this is the wrong place for this note.
Im massively looking forward to the livestream tonight as after what feels like a lifetime on this track, I'm about to enter into mastering stage of my Somewhere with you Remix, so its perfect timing for me.
I am trying to do everything in Reason rather than Ableton, so was wondering if you would be able to emphasise principles and any free VSTs you could recommend to do the same job as you have built in Ableton. (Appreciate you may not wish to go down a rabbit hole of Reason, as this is fairly niche).
I will try to keep up with the stream and put my questions in the chat as we go (as long as I don't get dragged into family responsibilities)
Anyway - see you folks on the other side....

Thanks everyone who has posted their tracks up already - its really helpful and inspiring to hear the direction that others are taking this in.
I figured I would follow suit as well and put my working version up here:

There is still lots to do - but I finally feel like I can see the end point (I think - haha)

Any early feedback would be greatly appreciated

Heyyyy Smillington! This is sounding great! Is that your vocals?

Hey @bevanmusiq - cheers buddy; think I will be working up to the deadline on this one... No not my vocals - I decimated allot of samples as well as recording some instrumentals. Thanks for listening...

Stuck on something??

Member Content Requests

Thanks Rob - Something I've been wondering about for a while now (possibly videos on this already).

Ive been having trouble with processing different instruments/recordings I am having trouble mapping sounds together to sound like one player at one time. Whist there will be allot to do with individual sounds of instruments, artists, recording conditions, etc - I am wondering what approach I can apply to bring sounds together to make them sound congruent.

I have played around with EQ and chopping individual notes to reduce artefacts (e.g. reverb) - whilst this helps, I am thinking maybe some sort of dynamic filter that can be applied, or simple approaches to EQ automation to help solve this problem.

Any tips or signposting to already made videos on this would be awesome. Or please let me know if my question needs further clarification..

Hardware

DAW or Software Questions

Sounds like an obvious question/discussion, so apologies if this duplicates another thread somewhere.
Would be interested to know what.hardware people use/recommend (or even dislike).
I've started using a digitkt for drums and loving the hands on feel. Only to put initial beats in as separate audio tracks to them manipulate via my DAW.
I definitely feel this is the way to help me find my own identity or production process.
Would love to hear what other's are into...

Thanks Rob (@ptmembership) - I was watching the livesteam a few minutes behind, so missed my question at the end. I wanted to ask Dom Ruckspin about how he deals with writers block - I've seen allot on this already but just thought it would be interesting to hear his view.
My main challenge with this remix challenge at the moment is that I have got something that has a similar feel to the original and I am trying to find a way change it up, but struggling to find something that works. I am noticing a common theme where I hit a brick wall with arranging and I get over half way through and want to put in a breakdown or introduce a new idea into a section. I normally thumble through somehow (by working out a way to keep some elements and change others). As I write this message, I'm thinking I will try chopping that guitar part to pieces through a sampler...

Hi @Rob, thanks for the videos I found them incredibly useful. I'm loving the tip to open look at the frequencies and the breakdown/drop ideas in last video.

I also wanted to feedback that you gave a slightly inaccurate description of the first and last chords:
Chords described in video:
F7, Emin7, Amin7, Gmin7, Cb7

However, the correct notation should be as follows:
FMaj7, Emin7, Amin7, Gmin7, C7

I hope you don't mind me pointing this out..

Right, this year, I'm finally making an album!

General Producer Chat

Looking forwards to the album Rob - are you going to focus on one style, or mix it up?

My personal target was 12 tracks in total (am massively behind schedule - my first took me 3 months and made good progress with my 2nd (using the arrangement 303 challenge to write a DnB track). However, I have paused with the 303 track, because I want to get something for this remix competition.

Finding every track a challenge and every time I think I'm honing my workflow I get inspired and go in a totally different direction - thanks Producertech!

@Latten - I did the same definitely the way to go

Which Controllers Do You Really Appreciate?

DAW or Software Questions

Interesting discussion thread - I suppose it depends how you use it as well.

I started off with an Arturia Keystep which was useful as a keyboard. I found the small keys got frustrating at times though, so upgraded to a nektar impact LX49+ which supposed to work with my DAW Reason. Its quite easy to map controls, but more often than not, I find myself looking at the screen more than the hardware actually.
That said, I also got a Digitakt prior to getting a DAW and found that fun to play with, but found greater flexibility and visibility with a DAW. Am determined to make the digitakt work to produce drums ontop of the DAW now, because I believe Hardware is a better route into creativity..

New Track | Lemon Juice | Breakbeat

Let us hear you!

Wow - great job for 9 hours work; I'm liking the unpredictability of it and the break is fantastic!
The snare feels a bit heavy to me and I wonder if it could benefit from some variations as well. But this may not be the effect you are looking for...
