Accountability and Feedback Group

General Producer Chat

Can't wait to kick things off!  Here's the Zoom call details - because it's a free account we're limited to 40 mins but I think that's a good thing to keep things concise.

For the first call, for those that want to, we can all spend 5 mins maximum to give a quick overview of our music making background and what are goals are (both short and long term).  I'll go first and see how it goes.

We can then go around everyone and confirm what we want to achieve before the next call and also raise any topics you would like to discuss or get advice on.

First Track - looking for feedback!

Let us hear you!

Well done for finishing! (what's your secret? :-))

I haven't listened to this on proper speakers/headphones yet, but I think the composition and arrangement is spot on for the genre/style of track you're going for.

Re the kick drum issue: It would be interesting to hear the unmastered mixdown before I listen to this one on proper speakers - any chance of uploading that on the forum/community site?

Hi all - thanks for the response - that's great! I'll setup a Zoom meeting

How does the last Tuesday of the month at 6pm UK time work for everyone? So the first one will be Tuesday 29th November.

Cheers

Hi all - now the latest Remix comp has closed, it's time to get back to working on some original material!

One of the key things these comps have confirmed for me is that there's nothing like a deadline to get you focused.

I don't think I'm alone when I say finishing tracks is something I really struggle with. It's partly down to my skill level and getting the tracks sounding how I want. But I also believe that self-discipline and time management is a bigger factor in holding back my progress and improving my skills.

So with that in mind, I wanted to ask if there is anyone else in the members community who thinks they might benefit from joining a group who meet up (virtually via Zoom) on a regular basis to share their goals, issues and work in progress (and finished tracks!).

I think a 30 minute Zoom call, once a month to share what our short and long term goals are and discuss anything else related to making music would really help us to focus our studio time and be more productive, finishing more tracks.

Would anyone be interested in joining the group and/or have any questions/suggestions about how it might work best?

Cheers
Simon

JAFUNK ECSTACY REMIX COMP

Announcements

Here's my entry. Initially I wanted to create a Techno remix, but the original stems were just too organic and real-sounding for that to work. So I still kept the tempo nice and high and went for a housey 'cut and paste' stomper using lots of little snippets from the stems with my own drums and percussion.

Production techniques

Something I'm coming to realise is the factor that has the biggest impact on the quality of a finished track is the original, raw sound sources. Yes, the processing is important but that's the icing on the cake and no amount of processing can make poor sound selection into a great track. Crap ingredients will always make the cake taste like crap :-)

Vocoder tutorial

Member Content Requests

Hi - don't know if this exists somewhere already in a course or bonus content but could you please create some content on how to get a classic 'robot voice' from a vocoder (the Daft Punk/Kraftwerk kind of thing).

I've followed some other tutorials and get the concept of the carrier/modulator etc, but it always sounds a bit crap so I'm guessing it's down to the source material I'm using or some settings I'm not aware of.

Thanks
Simon

Music Software from the 2000s

General Producer Chat

I started out using an Atari ST with what I think was called C-Lab Creator at the time. Everything else was hardware, daisy-chained with MIDI. All sequenced 'live' through a mixing desk onto a DAT recorder.

Creator didn't have the linear arrange timeline like Cubase did at the time, it was pattern-based and more like a hardware sequencer, but with the benefit of a computer screen to work with.

In hindsight, it was good not having the endless options you have today, but personally I'd much prefer using a modern DAW - I'm just getting my head around some self-imposed restrictions on my workflow to help streamline things though.
