Production techniques

Member Content Requests

Something I'm coming to realise is the factor that has the biggest impact on the quality of a finished track is the original, raw sound sources. Yes, the processing is important but that's the icing on the cake and no amount of processing can make poor sound selection into a great track. Crap ingredients will always make the cake taste like crap :-)

Vocoder tutorial

Member Content Requests

Hi - don't know if this exists somewhere already in a course or bonus content but could you please create some content on how to get a classic 'robot voice' from a vocoder (the Daft Punk/Kraftwerk kind of thing).

I've followed some other tutorials and get the concept of the carrier/modulator etc, but it always sounds a bit crap so I'm guessing it's down to the source material I'm using or some settings I'm not aware of.

Thanks
Simon

Music Software from the 2000s

General Producer Chat

I started out using an Atari ST with what I think was called C-Lab Creator at the time. Everything else was hardware, daisy-chained with MIDI. All sequenced 'live' through a mixing desk onto a DAT recorder.

Creator didn't have the linear arrange timeline like Cubase did at the time, it was pattern-based and more like a hardware sequencer, but with the benefit of a computer screen to work with.

In hindsight, it was good not having the endless options you have today, but personally I'd much prefer using a modern DAW - I'm just getting my head around some self-imposed restrictions on my workflow to help streamline things though.

Studio setup and sound treatment

General Producer Chat

Thanks for the link, sounds easy enough to make me want to have a go, I also found this video which uses the same approach but slightly different frame and also allows you to make the panels thicker, which probably helps their effectiveness.

Studio setup and sound treatment

I've been considering doing this as my room is apparently the worst possible - a small cube!

@tamlinspeaks - what type and thickness of Rockwool did you go for?

Attack Magazine produce a book called the secrets of dance music production which is quite good (most of the info is on their or other websites but if you want it all in one book you might like it - unless you're not making dance music :-)

HELLO 4AM REMIX COMP!

Well this didn't turn out quite how I first intended it to. I started with an idea for creating quite a heavy breaks version in 4/4 but just couldn't get the vocals to work. After trying a few different ideas out it ended up something completely different.

I've kept it in 3/4 and stayed quite true to the original structure but hopefully given it quite a different vibe where I've gone for a Cafe Del Mar/Ibiza sunset type track. Really enjoyed the challenge of working in 3/4 fo rthe first time ever.

Not sure if it was just my setup, but when I imported the unwarped stems, Ableton set a start point a few 100 ms in on some of the tracks, so the stems weren't all starting at the right/same point - so it took me a while to work out why it wasn't playing along nicely together.
