Professional Remixing Course - Simon Shackleton remixes Ellie Dixon

General Producer Chat

Hey folks,

Hope you're all doing well. Ahead of this Thursday's launch of a brand new tutorial series on Professional Remixing, I thought I'd share the track I created with you. It's a remix of the Ellie Dixon original that was featured in a remix competition earlier this year.

https://community.producertech.com/simonshackleton/uploaded_audio/albums/professional-remixing-course-2022

I hope you enjoy working through the course as much as I enjoyed making it. Remixing is such a great way of improving your production skills, and can give you valuable insights into other people's creative processes as well as fine tuning your own.

Simon Shackleton Livestream - 13 Sept 2022 - Let's talk ARRANGEMENTS

Livestreams

Excited to be back on the Livestream tonight from 6pm UK time on the Producer Tech members YouTube channel.

I know that a lot of people I mentor struggle with going from that cool 8-bar groove to having a working arrangement, so today we'll be looking at how to simplify your approach to get you finishing more music!

Any questions, drop them in here or bring them to the chat room this evening.

See you down the front :)

Controlling the Stereo Field (and why it's so important!)

General Producer Chat

Controlling the stereo field may not be the sexiest of subjects, but it's an essential part of creating clarity, balance, separation, and space in your mixes.

This short Ableton video offers some suggestions, solutions and good practices to help you in your quest to get all those parts to gel with one another!

Your Workflow in 2022

General Producer Chat
I learnt that I need to start giving myself some self-imposed deadlines and targets to work towards otherwise I just end up going around in circles and reworking tracks into something different but never finishing them. Sometimes it's fun just to boot up the DAW and see what happens but I also need to be a bit more disciplined so I can reach a point with each track to say it's done.
I think that learning to get to the finish line with tracks is super important. The point at which most people abandon tracks is generally the point where the dopamine kick they get at the heart of the creative 'moment' goes missing. If this is an area that you struggle in (ie. the arrangement part of the process), I would suggest leaning into that discomfort and figuring out how to push through. Get clear on what the incentives are to complete a track - perhaps sharing it with friends, having it played at a local club or on the radio, being able to post it on forums & on the socials etc ...

When you finish tracks you are effectively laying down building blocks on which you can build real progress ... but without those foundations, you'll find yourself going round in circles.

Song Explorer 003 - Where Embers Glow

General Producer Chat

In this series of videos I'll be walking you through the production process, raising the curtain on the creative and technical steps I took in writing, recording and mixing a selection of my tracks.

I use Ableton as my main production tool these days but many of the studio tricks and tips are transferable to any DAW. It's never been about what you use. It's always been about how you use it.

In this episode, I'll be taking on my Simon Shackleton track, 'Where Embers Glow' (Sputnik Sweetheart Mix, which was remixed and remastered for release in September 2021.

Complete beginners forum

DAW or Software Questions

Hey @tuto - general rule of thumb with plugins is to keep things as simple as possible for yourself when you're first starting learning music production. I would advise sticking to Ableton's stock plugins (on the whole they're very good) and focus on learning to use them well. What's cool about them is that the GUI is super simple which makes learning intuitive and relatively straightforward.

I find in the world of digital music-making people are in far too much of a hurry to buy new plugins in the mistaken belief that it will somehow make their workflow, or their music, exponentially better.
