A new summer challenge for members has been uploaded to the Downloads section, this one on sound design. You can find instructions and a selection of samples in there. The basic aim is to create a track using just one of the samples!

If you have any more questions, you can drop them on this thread. There'll be a prize for the best entry (details soon), awarded towards the end of the year, as well as a livestream on the 16th August with Rob Jones, to properly introduce the assignment and go through some recommended techniques.

Feel free to post any entries you have on here, and/or send them to rob@producertech.com. Have fun!

Hello all,

here is my contribution to this summer challenge. Hope you enjoy. I used the provided sample XTU_100_Fm_Warm_Synth_Combi_2.wav for all but the drums, where I choosed additional 3 samples for Kick, Snare and Hi-Hats. It turned out to become more of a chill-out track.

Hehe. It's not that bad ;-). For the bass sound I imported the sample into serum and just took a small part of it as a basis for the bass-sound. Good luck.

LOAJ_133_E_CD_Piano_Horns_&_Ac_Bass_7 was the sampled used to generate all sounds except the layered kick created for the track. Mostly used a filter to find sounds I felt were interesting or useful, then sliced the loop to a sampler or drum machine rephrase the material. Thanks for the challenge!

nice work Bionic Limbs! Lush intro with a lot of atmosphere! Some interesting percussion and rhythmic sounds in there too.

Question... the rules state to modify the original sample however we want. That I get. My question is about the three sounds we add. Do those three sounds have to stay in the spirit of the sound originally intended, or are those three sounds also manipulatable under the same parameters? ie. a kick has to stay a kick as one of the three added even if you warp it as a kick. Or can it be warped and changed into different sounds, like snares and toms, and added? And by sound, is that a single sample or a single VST? I'm just a little confused about the limitations. Thanks in advance, and be well

@betterledproductions the idea with the oneshots is to leave them as they are, e.g. all other sounds in the track need to come from the loop you choose

@menace we didn't officially set one, but we'll close the competition phase of the assignment at the end of October

I really enjoyed doing this, feel like I learnt a lot and made some of my plugin's work for a change! I used the 'LOAJ_133_E_CD_Piano_Horns_&_Ac_Bass_7' sample and added a kick, clap and open hat..

Great track. Really enjoyed listening to it. It doesn't sound like only 4 samples. Great work.

My little effort is probably way too late....And instantly disqualifiable on so many levels but I thought, if I don't send at least something, I wont even get to start the Jafunk mix this year:)
Very enjoyable exercise and a good opportunity check out a few, so far, untouched plugins rotting away in my closet.

Sample used is the XLX_60_G_Flying_3_Music_Combi.wav ( apart from kick, snare and hat)

I started with this but abandoned it early, then had a look at it last night to experiment with the new Transition FX racks.

All sounds are from XTU-100-Fm-Warm-Synth-Combi-2

Warning: Not suitable for audiophiles:)

Really great effort everyone! I've thoroughly enjoyed all of these.

Picking a winner is always difficult. However, we've got to give it to you Ben for creating something that could have easily been made with more than just 4 samples. So, congrats, Obscurium is on its way to you....
