Ever wonder why you fall for certain types of people? Or why we can have potentially the most perfect person is in front of us, and the spark just isn’t there.
When you look back at your past relationships, you will find a common theme among all these people. The factors in which you fell in love have everything to do with the chemistry in your brain.
There are many other deciding factors to falling in love before you actually do. It is because of these deciding factors or personal values that trigger activity in your brain that enables you to fall in love. So while I would love to believe in fate or fairy tales and this tale ends with the hopeless romantic coming out on top, I recognize there is science to the art of falling in love.
According to Helen Fischer, American anthropologist and human behavior researcher, wrote about the chemistry of falling in love. She went into major factors that trigger your attractions including economic background, religion, values, appearance, and intelligence.
When you come across someone you consider attractive and they fulfill this subconscious checklist rapid activity in the brain enables you to feel a certain way towards them. Then comes the science aspect of this. Four chemicals are released in the brain: dopamine, serotonin, estrogen, and testosterone
Dopamine
This chemical controls craving, addiction, reward, and motivation. The addictiveness to love can be compared only to that of a drug addict, responding to love as an addict would to needing a drug. Love does get you high, but in a different way. We, as humans, whether people like to admit it or not, are addicted to the idea of love and are constantly looking for that person to gives us those feelings.
Serotonin
This chemical controls moods and obsessive thoughts. Do you ever wonder why you can’t stop thinking about someone you just met? This chemical is what is released. Do you ever wonder why when you reject someone they continue to reach out to you? Or when you get rejected by someone, it almost feels like you want them more? I’ll let you in on a secret; you aren’t crazy. When rejection plays a part in a relationship even more serotonin is released causing you to think more about a specific person. Then dopamine is released and you are craving the person’s attention and you want the reward of success. The moment you’re rejected, you grow more attached.
Estrogen and Testosterone
This chemical controls your sexual desires.
For decades people have sung about love, written about love, pined for love, and lived for love. Love is one of the most addictive things life has to offer us. Anyone who has made it out alive, even if they got hurt, understands the power love has over us. There is no telling when you will fall in love or with whom and while you can’t control it, you can recognize major factors that play into the chemical process.
So next time you fall in love and you think you are going crazy, just remember it isn’t you - it’s chemistry
